In 1944 Marzabotto, a village in the mountainous area south of Bologna, Italy, the Waffen SS massacred 728 civilians, mostly children, Catholic priests and adults over 60 years of age. Forty five of the people killed were children under two years old. The events surrounding this tragedy are seen through the eyes of a child-Martina (Montanari), a little girl who saves the life of her baby brother. This historical drama richly portrays the lives of the Italian villagers, who, despite the German occupation, adhere to ancient tradition and the rhythms of rural life. In addition to its striking visual beauty, this film's cultural authenticity extends to the dialogue, which is spoken entirely in the Bolognese dialect. Winner of 3 David di Donatello 2010 Awards including Best Film and the Special Jury Award at the Rome Film Fest.
